The Little Prince - Costume Design

Summer, 2009
Resurgence Theatre Company
Aurora, Ontario, Canada
Director: Kelly Straughan

When designing 'The Little Prince' I took inspiration from the illustrations in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's cherished children's book. However, since the drawings are quite abstract and simple I needed to flesh out the characters in my own way. The challenge was to make the 4 cast members look like 12 different characters. By using masks for the characters that the Little Prince visits on the different planets I was able to disguise the actors. The director and I also decided to use the masks to differentiate between the characters that teach the Little Prince life lessons and the ones that do not. Audience response was great - many were surprised that only 4 actors played all of the characters.

All of the costumes were designed by me, cut by Rachel Berchtold at Marquee Costumes, and constructed by me.

The Rose
The rose costume took about 2 weeks to construct. It was quite an operation that involved red felt, a lot of white glue and forming each petal on a wire base to achieve the petal shape. The petal edges were wired to give more stability and then painted. The petals were each sewn on a corset made from stiff canvas then covered in red glittery fabric. A zipper at the centre back allows the actress to change very easily. The bodysuit fabric was died green by me and jeweled with swarovskis.

The Geographer
The robe is based on an academic robe. The idea was for the robe to look like a map. I appliqued the land on in green fabric and the longitude and latitude lines using black grograin. To finish it I airbrushed lightly around the land to create more depth.
